In 2024, a thrilling new racing class emerged that has motorcycle enthusiasts buzzing with excitement: the AFT AdventureTrackers class. This innovative racing format pits high-performance adventure bikes against each other on a challenging flat-track TT course, and it promises to deliver adrenaline-fueled action.
Earlier this year, the American Flat Track (AFT) Association announced its foray into this fresh racing category. The inaugural event took place at the iconic Sturgis TT in August, where riders showcased their skills on impressive machines like the Triumph Tiger 1200, Honda CRF1100 Africa Twin, and Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250. The Triumph Tiger 1200s stole the spotlight, dominating the podium and leaving a lasting impression on spectators.
The Sturgis TT course uniquely combines asphalt and dirt surfaces, offering riders an exciting challenge. The flat track utilizes most of the oval layout, but unlike traditional ovals, the Sturgis course features an in-field section with dirt and jumps, adding an extra layer of difficulty and thrill. This unique design allows riders to test their skills and push their bikes to the limit.

After the race, Sammy Halbert, the event’s winner, shared his excitement: “I’m stoked to take the win in the first-ever Sturgis TT AFT AdventureTrackers race. The Triumph Tiger 1200 was surprisingly easy to ride – especially in the dirt sections. No matter how hard I pushed it, the bike handled flawlessly. I’m proud to bring home this victory for the team at Triumph.”
Notably, second place was claimed by Iván Cervantes, a renowned five-time world enduro champion. Cervantes remarked on his experience, saying, “I was trying my best to learn the track and the bike during the practice sessions and worked to get better each lap while learning the other riders. It seemed that all the racers were very fast on the asphalt, and I believed my best option was to take advantage of the dirt section. After a bad start, I made a quick pass on turn two and held on to the end of the race. I want to thank Triumph and the amazing team for their confidence in me and for the invitation to participate in the AFT AdventureTrackers Race.”
With the AFT AdventureTrackers class, fans can expect more thrilling events showcasing the capabilities of adventure motorcycles and the skills of top racers. This exciting development in motorcycle racing is sure to capture the attention of enthusiasts and casual fans alike, making it a must-watch for anyone who loves the thrill of the ride!
