In a stunning display of skill and resilience, Pecco Bagnaia (Lenovo Ducati) redeemed himself at the Catalan MotoGP, clinching victory just 24 hours after crashing out while leading the Sprint. This remarkable comeback not only marked Ducati’s first win at the Spanish circuit in six years but also showcased Bagnaia’s strategic racing prowess in a thrilling full-length Grand Prix.
Starting from the middle of the front row, the reigning world champion quickly seized the holeshot, outpacing rookie Pedro Acosta (Tech3 GasGas) and Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM), both of whom faced their own struggles during the race. Championship leader Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Ducati) made a strong start from seventh on the grid, securing third place by the end of the first lap, with Sprint winner Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing) trailing closely behind.
Bagnaia’s calculated approach to the race allowed him to maintain his position amid early chaos, including Binder’s crash at Turn 10. Acosta, who had attempted to capitalize on his softer rear tire choice, initially challenged Bagnaia but ultimately lost control and crashed on lap 11, rejoining the race in 20th position.
As the race progressed, Martin led the pack with Bagnaia in pursuit, and the reigning champion demonstrated his tire management skills. On lap 19, Bagnaia made a decisive move past Martin at Turn 5, the very corner where he had crashed the day before. Despite Martin’s attempts to retake the lead, Bagnaia’s superior pace was evident as he steadily pulled away.
In the final laps, Marc Marquez (Gresini Ducati) found himself engaged in a battle for the podium, overtaking Espargaro for third place with just a few laps remaining. Espargaro, who had previously set a new lap record, narrowly missed reclaiming the podium spot by a mere 0.082 seconds.
Ultimately, Bagnaia crossed the finish line 1.740 seconds ahead of Martin, securing valuable championship points. With this victory, Bagnaia moves into second place in the standings with 116 points, trailing Martin by 39 points, while Marquez sits closely behind with 114 points.
As the MotoGP series heads to Mugello, Bagnaia’s home circuit, the anticipation builds for what promises to be another exhilarating race weekend.
