Ducati is celebrating 90 years in the motorcycle world and is posting some great historical material. This one especially got us going…

‘In 1990 Cagiva was owned by Ducati, and it proved to be a ‘golden’ year for them: in addition to the success enjoyed by the 851 in the World SBK championship, the Cagiva Elefant triumphed in the Paris-Dakar. Ridden by Edi Orioli, the bike – specially designed to take on the rugged African route – dominated the race with incredibly high average speeds. The success of the Varese-based brand was sealed by Ciro De Petri’s third place. Together, the Cagiva riders won 10 of the 20 stages. Much of their success was attributed to the Ducati 906cc engine developed by the Ducati race team; powerful and reliable, it was perfectly suited to the tough course conditions.’
