At just 17 years old, most teenagers would be satisfied with riding their motorbike around town, but not Luke Blackley. Shortly after passing his A1 license, Luke took on a massive 4000-mile journey through Europe on his Rieju 125, accompanied by his father, Gordon Blackley, a seasoned Isle of Man TT rider.
Their adventure, following the challenging Trans Euro Trail (TET), took them through six countries, with a plan to explore the real, untouched beauty of Europe. Luke’s passion for adventure was sparked years earlier when, at 12, he had ridden the TET Sardinia on the back of his father’s GS Trophy bike. Now, it was his turn to experience the thrill of the ride firsthand.

The preparation wasn’t easy. At first, Gordon thought Luke could travel abroad with just a CBT, but soon discovered they needed to rush to complete his A1 license. In just one month, Luke passed his theory, Mod 1, and Mod 2 tests, an achievement many said was impossible. But with determination and a lot of effort, Luke was ready to ride without L-plates.
The trip wasn’t without its challenges. Luke faced technical issues when his suspension linkage bearings failed mid-journey, but that didn’t dampen their spirits. The father-son duo remained upbeat, enjoying the ride and the chance to bond over their shared love for motorcycling.
For Gordon, the highlight of the trip was the chance to experience Europe in its raw form, staying away from tourist spots and rough camping every night but one. He remarked, “It was a stunning trip that I’m sure Luke will remember for the rest of his life. It showed him what he’s capable of and encouraged him to keep exploring.”
Luke echoed his father’s sentiments: “I would go again tomorrow. Life was just so simple: ride, find food, water, and fuel, camp, and repeat. Can it get any better than that?”
Their story is a testament to the spirit of adventure and the bond between father and son, showing that with the right mindset, even the most ambitious journeys are possible.
