The X Games is set to undergo a major transformation in 2026 with the introduction of a groundbreaking team-based league format, reminiscent of the structures seen in Formula One and LIV Golf. Spearheaded by Australian snowboarder Scotty James, this new approach aims to enhance the competitive landscape of action sports by promoting collaboration among athletes from various disciplines.
X Games executive chairman Jeff Moorad has stated that the new league will feature two distinct divisions: the Summer XGL and the Winter XGL. Each league will consist of four events and operate under its own points structure to determine both team and individual champions. The Summer XGL is likely to showcase skateboarding and BMX, while the Winter XGL will highlight skiing and snowboarding.
A unique aspect of the new format is the annual “industry-wide draft” that will assemble teams, allowing cross-discipline athletes to work together. This move is expected to create more commercial opportunities and increase the overall visibility of the X Games.
Scotty James, who has a deep connection to motorsport through his marriage to Chloe Stroll, the daughter of Aston Martin F1 owner Lawrence Stroll, has been instrumental in shaping this new direction. He hinted at the continued inclusion of freestyle motocross, a staple of the X Games since its inception in 1999, emphasizing that “Moto will always be part of X.”
The X Games, originally launched in 1995 as the Extreme Games, has a rich history of showcasing thrilling action sports moments and will continue to evolve with this exciting new format. The inaugural events for the X Games League are anticipated to take place in 2026, promising a fresh experience for athletes and fans alike.
